Almost 1 in 5 AI tools from 2025 is gone
In November 2026 we opened every website on our 2025 list of AI tools, 1,031 in all. Of the 987 we could check, 176 (17.8%) are gone and 10 more are shut down or shutting down. Another 22 were bought by other companies. Tools that our old discovery bot had added were five times as likely to be gone as tools a person added (36.4% against 7.3%).

How the gone sites fail
| What happens when you open it | Websites |
|---|---|
| Parked or for sale | 51 |
| The server doesn't answer | 33 |
| The domain doesn't exist anymore | 30 |
| Broken https (the certificate fails) | 30 |
| Page not found (404) | 17 |
| Server error (5xx) | 6 |
| Hosting turned off (402) | 5 |
| Stuck in a redirect loop | 2 |
| Taken over by gambling or streaming sites | 2 |
| Gone | 176 |
We opened every site that didn't load twice more, a few minutes later and again about half an hour later. mediscan.ai answered on the third try, so we count it as working, and the other 174 failed every time. The two taken-over sites do load, but amundsen.io and simpletransformers.ai now open a football streaming site and an online gambling site.
Tools our bot found were five times as likely to be gone
Our 2025 list came from two places. A person added 635 of the websites, and most of those were on the list by June 2025. An automated discovery run added 379 in December 2025 and January 2026, and 17 were added both ways.
| Added by | Checked | Still work | Gone |
|---|---|---|---|
| A person | 615 | 546 (88.8%) | 45 (7.3%) |
| Our discovery bot | 357 | 205 (57.4%) | 130 (36.4%) |
The bot's tools were the newer ones, and more than a third of them are gone within a year. We asked the Internet Archive about each of the 130. Only 46 have an archived page from 2023 to 2025 that isn't a parked domain, and some of those are placeholders, such as a default "Create Next App" page. For the other 84, the archive shows a parked domain or nothing at all, so many of them may never have been real products.
That is why we dropped every bot entry when we relaunched the list, and why a person now opens and reads each tool before it goes live.
Shut down or shutting down
These sites still load and say so in their own words.
- Arc"Arc is sunsetting on December 22, 2026."
- Vellum"Vellum's Personal Assistant Platform is shutting down. Download your assistant by December 13th, 2026"
- Flowise"We're sunsetting Flowise."
- Reworkd"We'll be sunsetting the product on February 6, 2025."
- Audiobox by Meta"As of February 2026, the Audiobox Demo is no longer available."
These were retired, and their old address now opens something else:
- Language Understanding (LUIS)now opens Microsoft's documentation for previous versions
- Socratic by Googlenow opens the page for Google Lens
- Spring Cloud Data Flownow opens its archived code in spring-attic on GitHub
- Wondershare VirtuLooknow opens an "Offline Notice" page
- AllenNLPnow opens the home page of Ai2, which made it
Bought by another company
In their own words:
- Humanloop"the Humanloop team is joining Anthropic!"
- Continue"Continue was acquired by Cursor."
- World Labs"World Labs is Joining AMD"
- Argilla"Argilla is joining Hugging Face!"
- Respell"The Respell team is joining Salesforce"
- Paperspace"Paperspace is joining DigitalOcean."
- Arterys"Arterys has joined Tempus"
- fast.ai"fast.ai is joining Answer.AI"
The old address now opens the new owner's site:
- Windsurfnow opens devin.ai
- Codeiumnow opens devin.ai
- Tectonnow opens databricks.com
- Gretelnow opens nvidia.com
- Kumonow opens docs.nvidia.com (NVIDIA Kumo)
- Evisortnow opens workday.com
- Casetextnow opens thomsonreuters.com (CoCounsel)
- MonkeyLearnnow opens medallia.com
- Idiomaticnow opens siena.cx ("Siena Insights, formerly Idiomatic")
- Aiseranow opens automationanywhere.com
Same tool, new name
68 tools work under a new name or address, so we count them as working.
- Codium is now Qodocodium.ai now opens qodo.ai
- Danswer is now Onyxdanswer.ai now opens onyx.app
- Phidata is now Agnoits GitHub project moved to agno-agi/agno
- Parcha is now Grep AIits site says "Parcha is now Grep AI"
- NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebooknotebooklm.google.com now opens notebook.google.com
- MultiOn is now AGI, Inc.multion.ai now opens theagi.company
- cursor.sh is now cursor.comsame product, new domain
- v0.dev is now v0.appsame product, new domain
If you pay for AI tools
- Pay monthly for a tool you haven't used for long. A yearly plan is a bet that the company lasts the year.
- Export your work now and then. Vellum gave its users a deadline to download their assistant, but a site that stops answering gives no warning.
- Check old bookmarks and links. Two old addresses on our list now open a gambling site and a football streaming site.
If you make an AI tool
- If you rename or sell, keep the old domain and send it to the new address. 68 tools on our list did, and their old links still work.
- Renew your domain and your https certificate. 30 sites failed on a broken certificate, and 30 domains no longer exist.
How we checked
We took every website from our 2025 list: 1,095 entries, which point to 1,031 different websites. Between 04:21 and 04:23 UTC on November 8, 2026, a crawler opened each one: one request per site plus its redirects, a 15-second limit, and never more than one request at a time to the same site. It said who it was in every request: AIPlatformsListBot, with a link to this site. Between 04:25 and 04:26 UTC we opened every failed site a second time, and between 04:50 and 04:51 UTC a third time.
A person read every page that mentioned a shutdown or a sale, and sorted by hand the 105 sites that now open a different address. For each gone site we asked the Internet Archive for a working copy from 2023 to 2025 and opened it to see whether it was a real page or a parked domain.
- A site that loads can still be a dead product. We only counted a shutdown when the site says so.
- The last check came about half an hour after the first, so a site that was down for a few hours counts as gone.
- The bot's entries were newer than the ones a person added, so the two groups had different amounts of time to fail.
Use the data
The CSV has one row per website: its name as it appeared on our list, the address, who added it, the result, why it failed, the address it opens today, what the Internet Archive showed, and the date we checked.
